Graner ESTIMATE €500 – €1,000 STARTING PRICE €500 Ernst Graner was an Austrian watercolourist and painter of architecture, landscapes and cityscapes. He is regarded as one of the leading Viennese watercolourists of his time. Graner began by completing an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and training as a lithographer, before taking drawing lessons from Josef Grandauer. From 1885 to 1889/90, he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Eduard von Lichtenfels and Franz Rumpler. From 1890 onwards, Graner exhibited in Vienna and developed his career primarily as a painter of cityscapes and architectural motifs. His watercolours depicting Viennese subjects such as the Hofburg, Schönbrunn, St Stephen’s Cathedral and buildings that no longer exist today—such as the Rotunde or the Philipphof—became particularly well known. Graner’s works combine precise vedute with lively figurative elements and are important visual records of old Vienna. From 1910, he was a full member of the Watercolourists’ Club of the Vienna Association of Fine Artists and was buried in a grave dedicated to him in his honour at Vienna’s Central Cemetery.
