George Grosz* (Berlin 1893 – 1959 Berlin) In a restaurant print/paper 19.5 x 25 cm from the ‘Kobes’ portfolio ESTIMATE €200 – €400 STARTING PRICE €200 German-American painter, graphic artist and cartoonist of the 20th century. A leading exponent of Verism and New Objectivity. Part of the so-called ‘exile art’ movement. Studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1909 to 1911, and at Emil Orlik’s School of Arts and Crafts in Berlin from 1912 to 1916. Worked at the Colarossi studio in Paris from 1913. In 1914, he volunteered for the First World War but was declared unfit for service following an illness. He became an opponent of the war, like his friend John Heartfield. In 1916, he co-founded the first Dada magazine, *Neue Jugend*, with Franz Jung and Wieland Herzfelde. In 1918, he organised the first Dadaist lecture evening at the Berlin Secession together with Raoul Hausmann and Richard Huelsenbeck. In 1919 and 1920, he founded several literary journals, including *Die Pleite* and *Die Blutige Ernsthaftigkeit*. Grosz’s satirical caricatures led to protests and convictions for pornography and blasphemy. In 1933, he emigrated to the USA, where he taught at the Art Students League of New York. In 1937, his works were classified by the Nazis as ‘degenerate art’. His students in the United States included Jackson Pollock and James Rosenquist. He produced social and socio-critical works, scenes from the underworld and the red-light district, nude depictions, caricatures and illustrations. Stylistically, his work can be associated with Verism and New Objectivity, comparable to that of Otto Dix, Christian Schad, Rudolf Schlichter, Karl Hubbuch, Georg Scholz and Jeanne Mammen.
