Albert Paris Gütersloh* (Vienna 1887 – 1973 Baden) The painter lithograph on paper, 24 x 14 cm signed Gütersloch, numbered 190/200 ESTIMATE €50 – €100 STARTING PRICE €50 Austrian painter, writer and stage artist of the 20th century. Born on 5 February 1887 in Vienna as Albert Conrad Kiehtreiber, he left school early, took acting lessons with Max Reinhardt and made his debut as a self-taught painter with drawings at the International Art Exhibition in Vienna in 1909. He studied under Maurice Denis in Paris from 1911 to 1912, changed his name to Albert Paris Gütersloh in 1921, served as a professor at the Vienna School of Applied Arts (1931–1938), after being dismissed by the Nazis and banned from working (1940), he served as rector of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (1953–1955). Gütersloh created watercolours, oil paintings, tapestries, mosaics and stained-glass windows depicting still lifes, portraits and landscapes, ranging from Expressionism and New Objectivity to surreal, visionary forms; Expressionist novel *Die tanzende Törin* (*The Dancing Fool*, 1911); Nazi confiscation of works as ‘degenerate’ (1937).
