Karl Hauk* (Klosterneuburg 1898 – 1974 Vienna) In a Café, 1920 oil on cardboard, 37.2 x 47.5 cm ESTIMATE €2,000 – €3,000 STARTING PRICE €2,000 Austrian artist of the 20th century, particularly active during the interwar period. A leading exponent of New Objectivity, Expressionism and Socially Critical Realism. Grew up in Linz, Upper Austria; studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Alois Delug, Karl Sterrer and Josef Jungwirth. Member of the Hagenbund and the Maerz artists’ association. In addition to oil paintings, drawings and watercolours, he created numerous works for public spaces, known as ‘Kunst am Bau’ projects. In 1928, he created frescoes for the Chamber of Labour in Linz; in 1936, frescoes for Linz Central Station and stained-glass windows for the parish church in Sandleiten, Vienna. He was a friend of Clemens Holzmeister. A leading figure in Christian art; in addition to church windows and mosaics, he produced numerous religious paintings and watercolours. He created figure paintings, mosaics, frescoes and landscapes featuring motifs from the Salzkammergut region around Lake Attersee. Hauk studied from 1918 to 1923 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Jungwirth, Sterrer and Delug, and exhibited for the first time in 1920 as part of a joint exhibition organised by the ‘Ring’ association of artists and art lovers in Linz. From 1923 onwards, Hauk divided his time between Linz and Vienna and worked as a freelance artist. He exhibited on numerous occasions at the Vienna Secession, the Hagenbund and the Maerz Artists’ Association, of which he was a member. From 1927 to 1938, Hauk was a member of the Hagenbund and was later able to continue working and exhibiting despite the Nazi regime. Between 1943 and 1945, he was conscripted into military service. In 1947, he took over as director of the art school in Linz and led a masterclass in painting until 1951. He exhibited regularly in Vienna and Linz during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1959, the Upper Austrian State Museum organised the group exhibition ‘Hauk-Dimmel-Hofmann’, featuring over 40 of Hauk’s works. After the war, he was primarily active as a designer of frescoes, mosaics and murals, which can be found in over 50 public buildings, mainly in Linz and Vienna.
