Studied at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna under Alfred Roller, Oskar Strnad, Anton von Kenner and Adolf Michael Boehm. In 1914 he volunteered for the First World War and returned as a pacifist. He became friends with Franz Theodor Csokor and was championed by Arthur Roessler. He was a member of the artists’ group Freie Bewegung and, from 1925 to 1938, a member of the Hagenbund. He lived for a time in Passau, alongside Georg Philipp Wörlen, Reinhard Hilker, Fritz Fuhrken and Franz Bronstert, as part of the artists’ group Der Fels. From 1922, he was married to the classical philologist Gertrude Herzog-Hauser. During the Second World War, he was in exile in Switzerland; his wife and son fled to the Netherlands. From 1947, he was once again involved in cultural reconstruction in Vienna. He served as Secretary-General and Vice-President of the P.E.N. Club, and as Honorary President of the New Hagenbund. His stylistic development ranged from classical, academic training through early Expressionism to New Objectivity. Themes included love, death, Eros, narrative representations and religious themes. From the mid-1960s, he undertook trips to Africa, increasingly incorporating African motifs.
