Josef Hegenbarth* (Bohemian Kamnitz 1884 – 1962 Dresden) Flutist lithograph on paper, 42 x 55.5 cm ESTIMATE °€ 60 – € 100 STARTING PRICE €60 Josef Hegenbarth was a German painter, graphic artist and art educator of the classical modern period, specialising in animal portraits, genre paintings and allegorical compositions. Born in 1884 in Bohemian Kamenice (now Česká Kamenice, Czech Republic) as the son of a teacher, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1905 to 1911 under Richard Müller and Max Frey. From 1914 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Berlin Secession, and from 1921 he was a professor of drawing at the Dresden Academy, where he taught animal drawing. Until his death, he produced thousands of pen-and-ink and woodcut works, demonstrating a keen power of observation. Hegenbarth depicted animals in human situations, satirical everyday scenes and poetic landscapes with precise lines, subtle irony and expressive black-and-white power, influenced by the Dresden Secession, French Belle Époque printmaking and Dutch genre painting; his woodcuts, pen-and-ink drawings and oil paintings feature dynamic compositions and anthropomorphic empathy.
