He moved away from the Munich Jugendstil movement at an early stage and developed a distinctive personal style. In particular, Heubner produced caricatures for the magazines *Jugend*, *Die Gartenlaube* and *Simplicissimus*. Together with Emil Preetorius, Valentin Zietara, Franz Paul Glass, Carl Moos and Max Schwarzer, he founded the artists’ group “Die Sechs” in 1914. Heubner first made his mark as a poster designer. Over the next few years, he designed advertising posters, as well as political ones, including for the Bayerischer Ordnungsblock, a völkisch-nationalist association. In the 1920s, he turned his attention more towards book illustration, creating etchings and lithographs. In his paintings of the 1920s, created whilst travelling, Heubner developed an Expressionist approach to landscape. From 1920, he was a member of the Munich Secession and exhibited there regularly. In 1927 he became professor of free graphics at the Munich School of Applied Arts. From 1932 to 1940, Heubner worked at the Nuremberg State School of Applied Arts and, from 1940 until his retirement in 1949, at the Academy in Munich. In 1944, his studio in Munich was destroyed; Heubner lived in Chieming until 1951.
