He settled in Augsburg at an early age, acquiring citizenship and master craftsman’s status there in 1493, and later married Justina Grimm, a sister of the publisher Sigmund Grimm. His significance in art history lies primarily in the fact that he was one of the first to use etching for printmaking, thereby taking an important step in the development of etching techniques. In addition to more than 140 surviving etchings, he also created woodcuts and decorated weapons and armour, which earned him great renown during his lifetime. Hopfer had close ties to the art and craft circles of Augsburg and later held municipal and guild offices. His work depicts themes from religion, mythology, the military and everyday life, and established him as one of the pioneers of early German printmaking.
