From an early stage, Israels adopted a modern, Impressionist style of painting and became one of the most important representatives of the so-called Amsterdam Impressionist movement. His paintings depict scenes of modern urban life, elegant women from Parisian and Amsterdam high society, cafés, fashion ateliers, street scenes, and bathers on the beaches of Scheveningen.
