Wilhelm Jaruska* (Vienna 1916 – 2008 Vienna) Horse, c. 1929 tempera on paper, 30 x 37 cm ESTIMATE € 300 – € 500 STARTING PRICE € 300 Austrian painter, art educator and graphic artist of the 20th century. A leading figure in modern art after 1950 and in figurative painting. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts under Wilhelm Müller-Hofmann alongside Arthur Zelger, Rudolf Korunka and Paul Kurt Schwarz. After the Second World War, he enjoyed great success as a poster artist and graphic artist. From 1954 to 1976, he taught poster art and illustration at the Institute for Graphic Arts and Experimental Design; his students included, amongst others, Manfred Deix and Gottfried Helnwein. He engaged with Austrian Expressionism as represented by Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Herbert Boeckl. In addition to portraits and figures, he also created landscapes of the forest and the Mühlviertel, as well as scenes from his holidays in Carinthia and Tyrol.
