Karl Stauffer-Bern was a Swiss painter, engraver and sculptor who was born in Trubschachen in 1857 and died in Florence in 1891. He is regarded as one of the most important Swiss portraitists of the late 19th century and made a name for himself, particularly in Berlin, with his finely observed portraits. Stauffer-Bern received his first encouragement to draw from his family and began his artistic career with an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Munich. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and moved to Berlin in 1880, where he quickly gained recognition as a portrait painter. His breakthrough was due, amongst other things, to a gold prize – or rather a gold medal – for a portrait, which opened the door to a wider audience. In addition to painting, he also worked as an etcher and created portraits of numerous prominent figures from the worlds of literature and art. From 1888 onwards, Stauffer-Bern lived in Italy, where his life was overshadowed by his relationship with Lydia Welti-Escher and the resulting scandals. In 1891, he took his own life in Florence.
