Walter Maria Kersting was an influential German architect, industrial designer and professor. He is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of modern industrial design in Germany. His most significant achievement, both in terms of design and history, came in 1933, when, together with his students in Cologne, he designed the iconic, minimalist Bakelite casing for the VE 301 ‘Volksempfänger’ radio. This functional radio design went into mass production, with millions manufactured, and had a lasting impact on industrial history. In 1928, Kersting, together with his wife, designed the innovative ‘Bilderbuch für Kaufleute’ (Picture Book for Merchants). It served as a groundbreaking handbook for the functional design of posters, catalogues and packaging.
