Ferdinand Kitt was born in Vienna in 1887. Between 1907 and 1914, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of Rudolf Bacher. In 1914, Kitt, his teacher Bacher and his colleague Josef Dobrowsky travelled to Italy, visiting Rome, Ravenna and Venice. After the end of the First World War, he became a member of the Vienna Secession; between 1926 and 1929, he also served as its president. From 1927 until 1947, Kitt taught young students at the Vienna Academy for Women Artists. In 1926, he founded the Zinkenbach Painters’ Colony near Lake Wolfgang, which existed until 1938. During the summer months, Viennese artists such as Josef Dobrowsky, Ernst Huber, Georg Ehrlich and others would come to Zinkenbach to work there. Although the group disbanded in 1938, Kitt remained in Zinkenbach and gave up his studio in Vienna. Ferdinand Kitt died in Vienna in 1961.
