Walther Klemm* (Karlsbad 1883 – 1957 Weimar) Set of 8 lithographs, circa 1919 lithograph on paper, 43 x 54 cm ESTIMATE °€ 80 – € 150 STARTING PRICE °€ 80 Walther Klemm (Karlsbad 1883 – 1957 Weimar) was a German painter, graphic artist, illustrator and university professor. Born on 18 June 1883 in Karlsbad, he studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Kolo Moser and Anton von Kenner, as well as art history at the University of Vienna. He produced his first colour woodcuts around 1903, exhibited at the Vienna Secession from 1904, shared a studio with Carl Thiemann in Prague and Dachau (1907–1913), became a member of the Berlin Secession (1910), appointed professor and head of the graphic arts department at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts in 1913 (until 1949), and made an honorary senator in 1952. Klemm excelled at woodcuts, colour woodcuts and illustrations (Goethe’s *Faust*, ‘Tyl Ulenspiegel’, ‘Don Quixote’), landscapes, depictions of animals and portraits characterised by strong light-and-shade contrasts, influenced by Japanese woodblock prints (Hiroshige, Hokusai) and Emil Orlik; international prizes in Rome, Leipzig and Paris.
