Bohuslav Kokoschka (Vienna 1892 – 1976 Vienna) was a Czech-Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with Expressionism. Born on 13 February 1892 in Vienna to Bohemian parents, and brother of the painter Oskar Kokoschka, he attended the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Gustav Siegel and Anton Trčka. In 1912, he took part in the ‘Sonderbund’ exhibition in Cologne, served in the First World War, and from 1920 to 1939 worked in Prague as an illustrator and stage designer (for example, for Max Reinhardt). He returned to Vienna in 1939 and was awarded the title of Professor in 1962. Kokoschka created portraits, landscapes, nudes and religious scenes in an expressive style characterised by impasto and dramatically lit forms, influenced by his brother Oskar as well as by Klimt and Schiele. His woodcuts, lithographs and posters are characterised by strong emotionality and dynamic lines.
