Heinrich Krause* (Rodaun 1885 – 1983 Vienna) Suburb oil on canvas, 68 x 57 cm labelled ‘Künstlerhaus’ on the reverse, dated 1954 ESTIMATE €400 – €800 STARTING PRICE €400 Heinrich Krause was an Austrian painter of the interwar period. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Julius Victor Berger and Christian Griepenkerl, and from 1903 also under Kasimir Pochwalski and Albin Egger-Lienz, who had a lasting influence on him. A scholarship following the completion of his studies enabled him to spend a year in Italy. From 1914, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Vienna Secession and remained a member until 1937. He then joined the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Numerous exhibitions in Austria and neighbouring countries earned him several awards, including the City of Vienna Prize in 1940 and the large gold medal of honour from the Künstlerhaus in 1963. In 1983, Heinrich Krause died in Vienna at the age of 98, almost deaf and blind. Portraits play an important role in Krause’s work. His landscape paintings also reveal influences from French Impressionism as well as a strong influence from Paul Cézanne.
