Fritz Lach was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with the Art Nouveau and Viennese Modernist movements. Born in Linz in 1868, the son of a machine manufacturer, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1887 under Rudolf Bacher and Christian Griepenkerl. He travelled to Italy in 1895, became a member of the Vienna Secession in 1897, produced illustrations for the magazines *Ver Sacrum* and *Die Zeit*, and taught as a professor at the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1912. He was awarded the Reichel Prize in 1908. Lach created portraits, genre paintings, landscapes and bookplates characterised by decorative ornamentation, fine lines and harmonious colours, influenced by Klimt, Moser and the Wiener Werkstätte. He also produced posters, book illustrations and tapestry designs featuring floral motifs and Symbolist elegance.
