Meidner’ ESTIMATE €100 – €200 STARTING PRICE €100 Ludwig Meidner was a German-Jewish Expressionist painter and graphic artist. Born on 18 April 1884 in Bernstadt (Silesia), he studied at the Royal School of Art and Crafts in Breslau from 1901 to 1905, in Berlin under Hermann Struck from 1905 to 1906, and at the Académie Julian et Colarossi in Paris from 1906 to 1911. In 1911, he was discovered by Herwarth Walden (of the ‘Sturm’ gallery). In 1912, he co-founded the Berlin ‘Pathetiker’ group with Richard Perls and Jakob Steinhardt. From 1916 to 1918, he served in the military (during which time he suffered a mental breakdown). From 1935 onwards, his work was condemned by the Nazis as “degenerate” (16 works were confiscated). He emigrated to Great Britain in 1939 and returned to Germany in 1953.
