After completing secondary school in Brno, he studied from 1873 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under August Eisenmenger, Christian Griepenkerl and Carl Wurzinger. In 1876, he continued his studies under the graphic artist Louis Jacoby. From 1884 to 1887, he was an assistant at the Vienna Academy’s general painting school for life drawing. Numerous study trips took him to Italy, France, England, the Netherlands and Germany. Michalek was one of the founders of the etching class at the Vienna Art School for Women and Girls, where, from 1898, he taught the main course on ‘Head and Nude’ and other courses on ‘Daytime Nude and Semi-Nude’ as well as ‘Nature Studies in Preparation for Arts and Crafts Purposes’. In 1909 he became a professor at the Graphic Teaching and Research Institute in Vienna. He held this post until 1920. At the same time, he taught etching courses at the women’s art school. Michalek produced numerous series of engravings and etchings, including depictions of composers, poets, Austrian Alpine railways, landscapes and technical subjects. He also created reproductions based on works by the old masters. He subsequently produced a large number of portraits, mostly in pastel. In 1888, Michalek received an Honourable Mention at the Paris Salon; in 1896, the Gold Medal at the Berlin International Art Exhibition; and in 1936, the Silver Jubilee Medal from the Cooperative of Fine Artists in Vienna. In 1940, he was awarded the Goethe Medal for Art and Science. Michalek married the pianist Lili Bailetti in 1883.
