He studied at the Prague Academy under Maximilian Pirner and Franz Thiele, and in Munich under Ludwig Herterich. Following extensive study trips through Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, he lived in Paris for five years and settled in Vienna in 1909. From 1905 to 1922, he was a member of the Hagenbund and, from 1924, a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. A journey through Manchuria, China, India and Japan had a lasting impact on his work. He produced numerous works featuring Asian landscape motifs, as well as figural scenes depicting markets and Asian traditions.
