Müller-Rundegg was born to Albin Müller, a decorative painter, and Klara Müller, and spent his youth at Rundegg Castle, after which he later named himself. He trained as a decorative and church painter in his father’s business and furthered his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and subsequently in Paris. During the First World War, he served with the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger, was wounded, and later moved to Salzburg, where he settled permanently. From 1918 onwards, Müller-Rundegg worked as a painter in Salzburg, exhibiting mainly landscapes of the Salzburg region. His works followed the tradition of atmospheric impressionism and were very well received. He was featured on several occasions at exhibitions at the Künstlerhaus, received various honours and, later, the Austrian State Prize as well as the Medal of the City of Salzburg. In the 1930s, Müller-Rundegg was a member of the Salzburg Art Association and regularly exhibited his paintings at his own Christmas exhibitions or at the Mirabell Artists’ Hall. After the war, he continued to work as an artist, became a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists in 1945, and received public honours in Salzburg on his 70th and 80th birthdays.
