From 1900 to 1903 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and from 1903 to 1906 at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. In 1906, he became a member of the Prague group OSMA (The Eight), which included representatives of the Czech avant-garde such as Otakar Kubín, Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta and Emil Artur Longen. In 1908 and 1909, he took part in the art exhibition in Vienna. His early influences included Vincent van Gogh and the Viennese Expressionist movement centred on Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Albert Paris Gütersloh. From 1911 to 1915 he lived in Berlin, where he explored Cubism and contributed to the magazine *Die Aktion*. From 1915 to 1925, whilst in Switzerland, he began to explore the theme of music. He was in Berlin in the late 1920s and returned to Vienna in 1931. In 1937, his works were classified as ‘degenerate art’ by the Nazis. He created primarily portraits, religious depictions and scenes from everyday life. He produced numerous Expressionist works, influenced by Cubism and Futurism, on the theme of music, including striking portrayals of composers, conductors, musicians and famous orchestras such as the string quartet founded by the brothers Arnold Rosé and Eduard Rosé in 1882. In 1938, Oppenheimer fled the Nazis, first to Switzerland and then, in 1939, to the USA.
