Karlheinz Pilcz was an Austrian painter and graphic artist primarily associated with the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Born in Vienna in 1940, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1958 to 1964 under Rudolf Hoflehner. From 1965 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Vienna Secession, co-founded the artists’ initiative ‘Reality is Out’, and was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts in 1972. In the tradition of Fantastic Realism, Pilcz created dreamlike, surreal scenes characterised by precise detail, fantastical figures and mystical symbolism, influenced by Albert Paris Gütersloh, Arik Brauer and Wolfgang Hutter. His oil and tempera paintings featured Baroque ornamentation, metallic highlights and a visionary visual language. Further artists and styles: Albert Paris Gütersloh, Arik Brauer, Wolfgang Hutter, Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, Vienna Secession, “Reality is Out”, Surreal Realism Austria, Gerda Matejka-Felden, Josef Dobrowsky, Karl Gunsam, Max Weiler, Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, Helmut Kies, Peter Proksch, Ernst Fuchs
