Josef Pillhofer was one of the most significant Austrian sculptors and draughtsmen of classical modernism after 1945. His sculptures masterfully straddle the boundary between human figuration and strict geometric abstraction. Throughout his life, Pillhofer remained faithful to the human figure, yet increasingly reduced it to basic cubic, tectonic forms. He worked with stone, bronze, wood and clay.
