Josef Pillhofer* (Vienna 1921 – 2010 Vienna) Portrait, 1945 crayon on paper, 48 x 45.7 cm signed Jpi, dated 45 ESTIMATE €300 – €600 STARTING PRICE €300 Josef Pillhofer was one of the most significant Austrian sculptors and draughtsmen of classical modernism after 1945. His sculptures masterfully straddle the boundary between human figuration and strict geometric abstraction. Throughout his life, Pillhofer remained faithful to the human figure, yet increasingly reduced it to basic cubic, tectonic forms. He worked with stone, bronze, wood and clay.
