Poledne, dated 1901 inscribed ‘Kriegsministerium am Hof’ ESTIMATE €1,400 – €2,000 STARTING PRICE €1,400 Franz Poledne was an Austrian painter and illustrator who became best known for his vedute of old Vienna. His cityscapes helped shape the sentimental image of ‘Old Vienna’, and he also worked as an illustrator for magazines such as *Über Land und Meer*, *Illustrirte Welt* and, from 1907, the *Illustrierte Kronen Zeitung*. Poledne began working as a young man in 1888 in the studio of the Court Theatre painter Hermann Burghart, where he remained until 1893. At the same time, he attended the drawing school at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna. As a painter, he produced oil paintings and watercolours in which he particularly captured the changing Viennese cityscape. During the First World War, he served as a Landsturm platoon leader and was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Medal for Bravery in 1918. He also worked for the Imperial and Royal War Press Quarters. He later lived in Klosterneuburg, where he died following a serious illness and was buried in the Upper Town Cemetery.
