Born on 27 February 1886 in Prague, he grew up in Vienna, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1902 under William Unger and Ferdinand Schmutzer, travelled to Italy, France and Holland in 1912, served as a war artist for the Austrian army from 1914 to 1918, married Friederike Knedel in 1924, emigrated to the USA in 1927, created illustrations for Theodore Dreiser’s *My City* in 1929, moved to San Francisco in 1938, and won prizes from the Chicago Society of Etchers (1942) and the California Society of Etchers (1942–1945). Pollak produced coloured aquatint etchings of New York, San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge), Sausalito, Mexico and Guatemala, as well as portraits (including Sigmund Freud in 1914) characterised by an Impressionist atmosphere, subtle grey tones and dynamic composition, influenced by the Viennese printmaking tradition and American Urban Realism; over 500 prints in drypoint, aquatint and soft ground.
