Born in Breslau in 1872, the son of an architect, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1892 to 1898 under Peter Janssen the Elder and Hugo Zieger. From 1900 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Munich Secession, and from 1910 lived as a freelance artist on the Rhine near Bonn, where he was a member of the Düsseldorf Artists’ Association. Reifferscheid painted Rhine castles, bridges and cityscapes using impasto, creating a luminous, sunlit atmosphere with an Impressionist looseness, influenced by the Düsseldorf School of Painting and Liebermann. His oil paintings, watercolours and etchings are characterised by atmospheric depth and classical composition.
