August Rieger was a Viennese landscape painter. He originally aspired to become a priest, but abandoned his theological studies and initially worked in the financial sector. In his mid-thirties, he began painting landscapes and joined the Hagenbund in 1938. His landscapes primarily depict views of Vienna and the surrounding area. Although he had no formal training and was self-taught, he was recognised as an artist by critics and colleagues and exhibited in art salons, particularly in Vienna.
