Ernestine Rotter-Peters was born in Vienna, the daughter of a carpenter. Her parents recognised and encouraged her talent from an early age, which enabled her to study art. In 1915 she began her artistic training at the Vienna Art School for Women and Girls, where her teacher was Otto Friedrich. In 1918 she went on to study at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Graphic Teaching and Research Institute) in Vienna, graduating in 1923 ‘mit vorzüglichem Gesamterfolg’ (‘with excellent overall success’). Her years of study were interrupted only by a brief study visit to Munich from 1919 to 1920. In 1917, she passed her teaching qualification and from then on worked as an art teacher at a Mädchen-Realgymnasium (girls’ secondary school) in Vienna, but in 1938, the year she married, she was forced to give up her professional career in favour of her husband, as a consequence of the ‘Doppelverdienergesetz’ (dual-earner law). From 1939, Ernestine Rotter-Peters worked as a freelance artist. In the post-war period, she increasingly turned to graphic art and achieved international recognition in this field. She was a member of the artists’ association ‘Gesellschaft bildender Künstler Österreichs’ (Society of Visual Artists of Austria) at the Künstlerhaus and the woodcut artists’ association ‘Xylon Austria’. In 1973, the Federal President awarded her the title of honorary professor. Ernestine Rotter-Peters died in 1984 following two strokes. Other artists and styles: Koloman Moser, A. v.
