Studied at the School of Applied Arts under Anton von Kenner, Franz Cizek and Oskar Strnad. Initially worked primarily as a graphic designer and illustrator for Arthur Roessler and Josef Luitpold Stern. From 1928 to 1938, a member of the Hagenbund; from 1946, a member of the Vienna Secession. Lived in Prague and Brno with his Jewish wife during the Second World War. In 1944, he was imprisoned at the Gräditz concentration camp; he was liberated by Soviet troops in 1945. He produced mainly woodcuts, watercolours, cityscapes, socially critical works and murals, as well as mosaics and graffiti for residential buildings. Early interest in the works of Egon Schiele; his artistic development spanned Expressionism and New Objectivity. In the 1920s and 1930s, he produced woodcuts in the New Objectivity style, including erotic motifs.
