Born in 1870 into a well-known Viennese family of artists, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, received several scholarships abroad (including in the Netherlands), became a member of the Vienna Secession in 1901, and in 1910 was appointed professor at the Academy, where he headed his own etching class. Schmutzer specialised in large-format intaglio etchings, portraits of artists, musicians and scholars, as well as impressive cityscapes, particularly of Vienna. His prints combine precise drawing with subtle lighting effects and a delicate, atmospheric tonality that makes his portraits appear exceptionally lifelike and psychologically nuanced. His style combines academically trained precision of drawing with a modern perspective and cropping style influenced by photography. Schmutzer is regarded as a key figure in Viennese printmaking prior to 1930 and made a significant contribution to establishing artistic etching as an independent, highly regarded art form on the international exhibition scene.
