Ottomar Starke was a German stage designer, graphic artist and painter associated with the Munich Modernist movement, specialising in bookplates, stage designs and decorative graphics. Born in Darmstadt in 1886, the son of a civil servant, he attended school in Freiburg im Breisgau, completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Coburg from 1906 to 1910, studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich under Maximilian Dasio, worked as an actor and stage designer in various theatres, and from 1920 onwards worked as a freelance graphic artist before later moving to Baden-Baden. Starke created imaginative bookplates, theatre sets and book illustrations characterised by delicate linework, ornamental elegance and Art Nouveau playfulness, influenced by the Vienna Secession, Munich Art Nouveau and the tradition of stagecraft. His etchings, watercolours and stage models were characterised by harmonious composition and a theatrical atmosphere.
