Heinz Steiner* (Vienna 1905 – 1974 Vienna) Winter joy woodcut on paper, 32.5 x 45 cm artist’s and estate stamp, hand-stamped ESTIMATE °€ 60 – € 100 STARTING PRICE €60 Heinz Steiner was an Austrian artist. He did not attend an art school or academy, but received his artistic training as a private pupil of Georg Merkel. Thematically, he devoted himself primarily to landscapes and working-class settings, but also explored Arcadian themes. In 1927, Steiner was given the opportunity to exhibit at the Hagenbund (Georg Ehrlich, Carry Hauser, Karl Hauk, Erwin Lang, Georg Merkel, Albert Reuss, Heinrich von Zügel, etc.) for the first time. Ten years later, he became a member. Steiner engaged intensively with Cubism. Owing to the modernist tendencies in his paintings, he was partially barred from exhibitions in 1938. After 1945, he continued his work as a member of the Vienna Secession and took part in several exhibitions both at home and abroad.
