Description
Richard Teschner (Karlsbad 1879 – 1948 Vienna) Portrait of a girl, 1926 oil on panel, 34 x 28 cm monogrammed RT, dated 26 ESTIMATE € 600 – € 800 STARTING PRICE € 600 The Austrian artist Richard Teschner was a leading figure of the Viennese Art Nouveau movement. He was born in Carlsbad, Bohemia. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. He was a craftsman, puppeteer and member of the Wiener Werkstätte. He spent his summer holidays on Lake Attersee in the circle of Gustav Klimt. Inspired by Javanese puppet theatre, fairy tales and legends, he created oil paintings and prints, as well as rod puppets and stage sets featuring fantastical motifs and character designs such as the rowers. Teschner first studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts and later at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. After moving to Vienna, he joined the Wiener Werkstätte. From 1910 onwards, like Gustav Klimt, he was part of a group of artists and creative people who were regular guests at the villa of the imperial and royal court carpenter Friedrich Paulick, where they spent their summer holidays on Lake Attersee. There he met the host’s daughter, Emma Paulick, whom he married in 1911. This advantageous marriage granted him financial independence. Inspired by Javanese stick-puppet theatre, he subsequently turned not only to painting and printmaking but also to puppetry, designing his own stick puppets and proscenium stages. His paintings and prints are influenced, amongst other things, by elements of Asian culture as well as fairy tales and legends. Other artists and styles: Siegmund Lympass, Edmund Hellmer, Josephine Müller, Wiener Werkstätte, Otto Prutscher, Gustav Meyrink, Max Brod, Paul Leppin PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price comprises the highest bid plus the buyer’s premium, VAT and, where applicable, the artists’ resale rights fee and platform fee.
