Max Thalmann (Rudolstadt 1890 – 1944 Jena) Passion, 1923 8 woodcuts on paper, 57.7 x 39.7 cm all sheets signed ‘Thalmann’, numbered 108 poems by Albert Talhof ESTIMATE °€ 250 – € 500 STARTING PRICE °€ 250 Max Thalmann was a German painter, printmaker and etcher associated with the New Objectivity movement, specialising in cityscapes, architectural views and woodcuts. Born in Rudolstadt in 1890, the son of a bookseller, he studied at the Berlin-Charlottenburg Academy of Art from 1909 to 1914 under Hermann Struck. From 1918 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Berlin Secession, and from 1925 worked as a freelance artist in Jena. He received awards for his etchings and produced over 500 prints of European cities before his untimely death. Thalmann etched Gothic churches, Renaissance palaces and medieval alleyways with precise lines, nuanced shading and the clarity of New Objectivity, influenced by the tradition of Dürer, Whistler and contemporary architectural photography. His etchings, woodcuts and watercolours are characterised by topographical accuracy and atmospheric depth.
