Born in 1895 in Benninghofen, the son of a factory worker, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Max Bergmann from 1919 to 1924. From 1928, he took part in exhibitions at the Stuttgart Art Gallery, and from 1930, he taught as a professor at the Free Art Academy in Stuttgart. He was a member of the Swabian Artists’ Association and, from 1945 onwards, created post-war industrial landscapes. Tombrock painted Swabian factories, portraits of workers and cityscapes with clear lines, subdued lighting and realistic precision, influenced by New Objectivity, Rhenish Classicism and contemporary photography. His oil paintings, watercolours and woodcuts were characterised by geometric composition and a keen sense of social observation.
