Born in Memmingen in 1885, the son of a doctor, he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1905 to 1911 under Heinrich von Zügel and Max von Weber. From 1919, he took part in exhibitions organised by the New Munich Secession, and from 1920, he taught as a professor at the Municipal School of Art and Clothing in Augsburg. He was suspended from teaching from 1933 to 1945, and after 1945, he was appointed to a professorship at the Munich Academy and was a co-founder of the Schwabing Art Circle. Unold painted Swabian portraits, still-life interiors and biblical scenes characterised by clear lines, subdued lighting and psychological precision, influenced by New Objectivity, Baroque painting and religious mysticism. Oil paintings, watercolours and etchings characterised by a geometric formal language and spiritual intensity.
