Little is known about his early life. He emigrated to France in the 1920s and spent the years from 1929 to 1934 in Paris before moving to Nice. There he exhibited in numerous galleries along the Côte d’Azur and at the Cannes Museum. He also exhibited his work in Switzerland and gained public recognition when one of his paintings was acquired by the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art. Although Vigny’s works can be found in numerous French museums, he remains relatively unknown on the Austrian art scene. His works are appreciated in Paris and Nice for their striking views of Parisian streets, bustling beach scenes and the boulevards of the French Riviera, as well as his expressive floral still lifes. To assess Vigny’s specific aesthetic, one must consider the context of French and international modernism. There, numerous comparisons spring to mind, such as with Vlaminck in Vigny’s views of Montmartre, the dark colouring of Rouault, or the lightness of Raoul Dufy’s beach scenes.
