Austrian painter of the 20th century. Studied at the Academy of Music for two years, then at the Vienna School of Art under Oskar Strnad and Josef Frank. From 1928, on the recommendation of Walter Gropius and through the mediation of Josef Frank, she attended the Bauhaus in Dessau in Paul Klee’s class. She attended courses taught by Wassily Kandinsky. She moved to Berlin in 1932, where she came into contact with Bruno Cassirer, Bert Brecht, Otto Dix, and Klaus and Erika Mann. In 1933 she returned to Vienna and fled to Switzerland, France and England, before moving to the USA following the Anschluss in 1938. Her studio in Buchfeldgasse, Vienna, was taken over by Heimito von Doderer; Albert Paris Gütersloh lived there as a sub-tenant. Always critical of anti-Semitism and fascism, her second husband was of Jewish origin. In the United States, she taught art at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and at the Moravian Seminary and College for Women in Pennsylvania. After the war, she lived in Vienna, the south of France (Dieulefit) and Venice. In 1937, she worked at the Würthle gallery and was a member of the Austrian Werkbund. She began to produce more woodcuts whilst in Venice, creating many portraits, including those of musicians, cellists, composers and conductors.
