Born in Arnstadt in 1893, the son of a stonemason, he studied at the Weimar School of Applied Arts under Walther Klemm from 1919 to 1922. From 1925 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Berlin Secession, and from 1930 worked as a freelance artist in Berlin and Naumburg. He taught as a professor at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts and produced thousands of woodcuts and lithographs featuring sharp social criticism until his death. Weber created biting caricatures, political posters and genre paintings characterised by precise linework, expressive black-and-white power and grotesque exaggeration, influenced by Expressionism, Dadaism and the Dutch graphic tradition. His woodcuts, etchings and watercolours featured dynamic compositions and satirical incisiveness.
