Julius Zimpel was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with Viennese Modernism, specialising in portraits, nudes and genre paintings. Born in Vienna in 1896, the son of a craftsman, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Rudolf Bacher from 1914 to 1918. From 1920 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Vienna Künstlerhaus (Artists’ House), worked as an illustrator for magazines such as *Die Muskete*, continued to work freelance in Vienna, and died young at the age of 29 from tuberculosis. Zimpel painted sensual nudes, elegant portraits and scenes of everyday life in Vienna, characterised by fine lines, soft modelling and subtle eroticism, influenced by the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop), Art Nouveau and Impressionist portraiture. His oil paintings, pastels and pen-and-ink drawings are characterised by harmonious composition and melancholic intimacy. Further artists and styles: Rudolf Bacher, Vienna Künstlerhaus, Die Muskete, Viennese Modernism, Art Nouveau, nude art, Künstlerhaus, Gustav Klimt, Dagobert Peche, Oskar Strnad, Wiener Werkstätte
