Ludwig Angerer (Malacky 1827 – 1879 Vienna) Group portrait, c. 1860–1870 albumen print, 22 x 31.5 cm photographer’s blindstamp on mount (33 x 45 cm) ESTIMATE €150 – €300 STARTING PRICE €150 Ludwig Angerer was an Austrian photographer and one of the pioneers of portrait photography in the Habsburg Empire. Originally trained as a pharmacist, he turned to photography in the 1850s and became one of Vienna’s most renowned photographers. Appointed Court Photographer to Emperor Franz Joseph I, Angerer was celebrated for his technically accomplished portraits of the imperial family and the aristocracy. He was also a member of the Vienna Photographic Society and played an important role in establishing photography as both an artistic and commercial medium in Austria.
