Ashton* (Charles County 1883 – 1976 Port-au-Prince) Immigrants from Italy arriving at Ellis Island, 1909 gelatin silver print 27.6 x 35.3 cm on the reverse: photographer’s stamp and Underwood & Underwood stamp printed later with an ‘American Museum of Photographs’ stamp on the reverse ESTIMATE €300 – €700 STARTING PRICE €300 Horace D. Ashton was a pioneering photojournalist. He was employed by Underwood & Underwood. His subjects included the Wright brothers’ first public flights, the rapid expansion of New York City, the plight of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, and life in New York’s slums. Further artists and styles: New York City PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price comprises the highest bid plus the buyer’s premium, sales tax and, where applicable, the artists’ resale rights fee and platform fee. In the case of standard taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid.
