Max Baur began his photographic career in 1924. In 1928, he set up a studio and a postcard publishing business in Wernigerode. For a time, Baur collaborated there with the Austrian landscape photographer Adalbert Defner. From 1933 onwards, he became acquainted with Hermann Hesse, who went on to collect his photographs.
