Yousuf Karsh was a Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century.
A survivor of the Armenian Genocide, Karsh emigrated to Canada as a refugee. By the 1930s, he had established himself as a leading photographer in Ottawa, where he lived for most of his adult life. More than 20 of Karsh’s photographs appeared on the cover of *Life* magazine until his retirement in 1993.
