Walter Helbig* (Falkenstein 1878 – 1968 Ascona) Magazine for original graphic art 8 woodcuts on paper, 40 x 40 cm ESTIMATE: €100 – €200 STARTING PRICE: €100 German and Swiss painter, graphic artist and woodcutter of the classical modernist movement. Walter Helbig was born on 9 April 1878 in Falkenstein im Vogtland (Saxony), moved to Dresden with his family in 1885 and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts under Carl Bantzer and Otto Gussmann from 1895 onwards; a trip to Italy from 1897 to 1899 brought him into contact with Arnold Böcklin, Adolf von Hildebrand and the Marées circle. In 1910, he moved permanently to Switzerland, where he co-founded the ‘Moderner Bund’ (Modern League) in 1911–12 and settled in Ascona in 1924. He was granted Swiss citizenship in 1938 and died on 26 March 1968 in Ascona. Helbig’s work evolved from Symbolist-influenced, expressive figure paintings to colourful landscapes, still lifes and nudes. He was equally proficient in woodcuts, drawing and oil painting, and incorporated trends from Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada, Abstract Expressionism and Informel without completely abandoning figurative art. He created important woodcut series (including ‘Adam and Eve’), took part in exhibitions organised by the Neue Secession Berlin, the ‘Blauer Reiter’, the First German Autumn Salon and the 1913 Armoury Show in New York, and influenced the Ascona artists’ colony through the group ‘Der Große Bär’ (The Great Bear). The mandatory sales tax of 13 per cent (20 per cent for photographs) is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer’s premium and the platform fee. The buyer’s premium amounts to 28% in the case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
