Ossip Zadkine* (Belarus 1888 – 1967 Paris) Works of Hercules portfolio of 28 lithographs accompanied by Euripides’ *Hercules*, translated by J. A. Hartung lithograph on paper, 69 x 52.8 cm signed O. Zadkine, numbered 120/350 signed on the plate O. Zadkine ESTIMATE €1,000 – €2,000 STARTING PRICE €1,000 Ossip Zadkine was a Russian-French sculptor associated with Cubism and Expressionism, specialising in dynamic figures, monumental sculptures and war memorials. Born in 1890 in Smorgon (now Belarus) as the son of a Jewish art dealer, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts La Palette in Paris from 1906 to 1911 under Henri Laurens. From 1911 onwards, he took part in the Paris Autumn Salon exhibitions, became a French citizen in 1921, and taught as a professor at the École des Grandes Chaumière from 1945. He was married to Valentin Prax and created over 400 sculptures worldwide until his death. Zadkine created Cubist-style fragmented figures, dance-like compositions, and expressive monuments characterised by fractured forms, dynamic movement and emotional intensity, influenced by Pablo Picasso, Romanian Expressionism and African sculpture. His works include bronze castings, stone sculptures and wood carvings featuring rhythmic fragmentation and humanistic drama.
