He received his artistic training from his father, William Callow, a renowned watercolourist, and developed a particular talent for landscape and veduta painting at an early age. Throughout his career, he travelled to numerous regions of Great Britain and mainland Europe, capturing their coastlines, river landscapes and towns in atmospheric paintings and watercolours. Callow’s work is characterised by precise observation of nature, a subtle handling of light and a richly detailed rendering of architecture and landscape. A particular focus is on views of coastlines, harbours and river landscapes, which he frequently combined with atmospheric weather conditions. As a representative of 19th-century English landscape painting, he built on the tradition of topographical painting and combined it with the artistic ideals of Romanticism.
