Born in 1887 in Vitebsk (now Belarus) into a Jewish family, he studied in St Petersburg under Juchanon Jawlensky from 1907 to 1910 and in Paris under Aristide Maillol in 1911, as well as in Montparnasse, where he became acquainted with Robert Delaunay and the Cubists. Following the revolution and civil war in Russia (1917–1922, during which he studied art in Vitebsk under El Lissitzky), he returned to France in 1923, where he lived with his wife Bella Rosenfeld and created dreamlike scenes depicting Jewish life, circus motifs and biblical imagery. Chagall developed a poetic surrealism featuring flying figures, bright colours and symbolism drawn from his childhood in Vitebsk; from 1941, he lived in exile in New York, later creating stained-glass windows (e.g. Hadassah Synagogue, Jerusalem, 1961; UN, 1964), stage designs for Stravinsky’s operas and mosaics.
