Description
Lovis Corinth (Tapiau 1858 – 1925 Zandvoort) Animals lithograph on paper, 46.7 x 34 cm signed Lovis Corinth, creases along the left-hand edge ESTIMATE €50 – €100 STARTING PRICE €50 German painter of the 20th century. Born in Tapiau (East Prussia) in 1858, he studied at the Königsberg Academy from 1876 to 1883, and in Munich, Antwerp and Paris under Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury. In 1900, he moved to Berlin, became a member of the Berlin Secession (serving as its president from 1911) and married Charlotte Berend in 1903. After suffering a stroke in 1911, his style shifted from Impressionism to the colourful style of Expressionism; he spent his later years at Walchensee painting landscapes and religious motifs. Corinth created portraits, nudes, still lifes and religious scenes with loose brushstrokes and vibrant colours, influenced by Realism, Impressionism and Expressionism.
